Things To Consider In Choosing Your Fly Fishing Rods

Clueless on what rod you should be using for your first fly fishing trip?

Fret no more. These questions will help you find that perfect fly fishing rod that will bring you your first photo-worthy catch.

1. What species are you inclined to fish?

A 5-weight fishing rod would be a good choice if you want to fish for a trout but want to get a rod that can be used for a trout swimming in a small brook. If you just want to fish for smaller trout, get a 3 or 4-weight rod. If what you want are salmons and large rainbow trout in Alaska, get a rod that is at least 7-weight. Rods to be used on saltwater fish - bonefish, permit, small tarpon and barracuda - are from 8-weight to 12-weight.

When it comes to length, use a short rod for short casting distance. It will not bend much, but can hold a heavier fish. This is advisable for fishing in deep waters. If you intend to cast out further into the water, you choose a longer rod.

2. What material would you want on a fly fishing rod?

Do you want one made of graphite, fiberglass, or bamboo?

Graphite, the most popular material for rods, is stiff and lends well to casting against any kind of wind. Graphite rods are light, versatile, and cheap. It’s the material suited for catching most types of fish.

Bamboo rods, which are more expensive, are for those who are after craftsmanship and those who want a lighter casting style. When you’re using bamboo rods, you can feel every head shake and tail waggle of the fish. However, their tips are prone to breaking in cold weather and they need regular maintenance.

Most old-timers learned to fish using glass rods, as they were staples of shops in the 60s and 70s. Glass, like bamboo, can cast dry flies with delicacy, but is much lighter and has more of a backbone.

3. How much would you spend?

Would you want typical fly fishing rods, or would you want high-end ones? There are several rods available online that will fit your budget. Check out sellers like Sydney Fly Outfitters & Guiding for a variety of quality rods.

For beginners, it is advisable that rods and reels be bought together. This will ensure compatibility.
